{"id":440,"date":"2019-01-27T00:30:52","date_gmt":"2019-01-27T06:30:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nebraskayouthcamp.com\/?page_id=440"},"modified":"2026-02-20T19:20:11","modified_gmt":"2026-02-21T01:20:11","slug":"history","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/nebraskayouthcamp.com\/?page_id=440","title":{"rendered":"Camp History"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-60fc2bbb392e118c997043f42053578b\"><br><strong> Historical Information<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-58abc6ccb0b4e1861dc5980a92886cc1\">\n<li>Nebraska Youth Camp became an official non-profit corporation on March 3rd, 1962.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The original Articles of Incorporation were signed by: Royce Blackburn, Colis Campbell, Howard Gurganus and Roger Hawley, all from York, Nebraska<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The initial board of directors were: Royce Blackburn-York, Colis Campbell-York, LeRoy Davis-Omaha, Howard Gurganus-York, Roger W. Hawley-York, Glenn Larsen-Albion, Coleman Phelps, Jr.-Lincoln, Bruce Scroggin-Oak, and Harry Tubbs-Hastings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>First encampment was held on the York College campus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Camp was held at Camp Kiwanis in Milford and in Fremont before the camp grounds by Kearney were purchased.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The camp grounds by Kearney were formerly called Camp Schwarzenau served by the church of the Brethren.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reuben Sanner heard the camp was for sale and told his daughter and son-in-law: Helen and Raymond Hogins who informed the churches.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reuben Sanner donated the first $50 towards the purchase of the property.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The walk-in cooler (used to be in the old Mess Hall) was purchased for $35 from a tavern near York.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The incinerator came from the Safeway store in Kearney in 1968.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A buffalo barbecue was held during a 4th of July celebration in the 1960&#8217;s.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The original two ovens were purchased from the Lincoln Public Schools.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The flag pole came from downtown Lincoln, 700 F Building at 13th and P.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The camp grounds were named Trail Junction because the Oregon Trail, Mormon Trail and possibly the Santa Fe Trail converged in this area according to Dr. Manley UNL History Professor (1970&#8217;s).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seven acres on the North side of the interstate were considered too dangerous for water activities and sold. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"782\" src=\"https:\/\/nebraskayouthcamp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/NYCmap1966-1024x782.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-596\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nebraskayouthcamp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/NYCmap1966-1024x782.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nebraskayouthcamp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/NYCmap1966-600x458.jpg 600w, https:\/\/nebraskayouthcamp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/NYCmap1966-300x229.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nebraskayouthcamp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/NYCmap1966-768x586.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nebraskayouthcamp.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/NYCmap1966.jpg 1039w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Original camp site. Included lake north of the interstate.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Historical Timeline<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-72f33c179c039b0b3fa08f59839bfd3a\">\n<li>1950&#8217;s<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> Camp Schwarzenau, now Nebraska Youth Camp, was rented for summer camp use by local churches of Christ .<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-c6eb6db7914b013b34b5876a82636bc3\">\n<li>1958?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> A strip of land was purchased from the camp for Interstate 80.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A new lake was dug out on the south side of the interstate instead of being pumped out so it would be safe for swimming since it is shallower. (per Roger Hawley)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1962-1965<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> Nebraska Youth Camp, a non-profit corporation, was formed at York College. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Camp was held at various locations such as:  York College,  Camp Kiwanis in Milford and in Fremont. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-813c270c3879f15be72b64f5a8994331\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">1966<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"> Nebraska Youth Camp site near Kearney was purchased for $20,000.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\"> The $8,000 down payment was raised from $100 donations from Church of Christ members.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Bruce Scroggins held a note for $12,000 for two years.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Camp sessions started with all ages together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Camp ran from August 14 to 27 at Camp Kiwanis, camper costs were: $15\/1 week;
